Remove an App from the Mac Dock Without Uninstalling It

Learn how to remove a Dock shortcut, keep an app pinned after quitting, or uninstall it—and what each action actually changes.

Removing an app from the Dock removes its shortcut; it does not uninstall the app. If you only want a less crowded Dock, remove the icon and leave the app in your Applications folder.

Remove the Dock icon and keep the app

  1. Quit the app if you want its icon to disappear right away.
  2. Drag the icon out of the Dock until Remove appears, then release.
  3. Open the app later from Applications or Spotlight. To pin it again, Control-click its Dock icon and choose Options, then Keep in Dock.

The icon may return temporarily if macOS is showing suggested or recently used apps. Turn off that separate section in Desktop & Dock settings if you do not want it; this guide explains what that switch changes.

Uninstalling is a different action

To uninstall an app, use its own uninstaller when it provides one, or remove the app from Applications using the method recommended for how it was installed. Deleting an app does not necessarily remove documents you made with it or cancel a subscription. Check the app maker’s instructions before deleting an app that manages drivers, plug-ins, or background services.

Which action should you choose?

  • Want the app available but not pinned? Remove only the Dock icon.
  • Want it to stay pinned after you quit? Choose Keep in Dock.
  • Want to remove the app from the Mac? Follow the app’s uninstall instructions.

Apple describes Dock items as shortcuts to the original apps and files. Read Apple’s Dock guide and Apple’s app removal instructions. If you are reorganizing rather than deleting, start with a practical Dock layout guide.
