A Question Mark in the Mac Dock: Find or Remove the App Icon
Learn why a question mark appears over a Dock icon, how to find or reinstall the app, and when it is safe to remove the shortcut.
A question mark over an app icon in the Mac Dock means the shortcut points to an app macOS can no longer find. Apple documents this appearance when an app has been deleted but its Dock icon remains.
If you still want the app
- Check Applications or Spotlight to see whether the app is still installed.
- If it came from the Mac App Store, open your App Store account and redownload it if it is available there.
- For an app from a developer’s website, use the developer’s official download or recovery instructions.
- Open the restored app, then choose Options > Keep in Dock if you want its icon pinned again.
If the app opens from another location, remove the stale question-mark shortcut and add the working app back from its current location. Do not delete app data folders just to clear a Dock icon.
If you no longer need the app
Drag the question-mark icon out of the Dock until Remove appears. That removes the broken shortcut, not another copy of the app. If you are unsure whether you want to uninstall an app or only clean up the Dock, readthe difference between those actions.
